In the realm of spiritual practices and metaphysical exploration, the terms “mediumship” and “channeling” often arise, sometimes used interchangeably. While both involve acting as a conduit for non-physical energies or entities, understanding their distinct purposes and processes can offer a clearer perspective on these fascinating abilities. So, what exactly sets a medium apart from a channel? Let’s delve into the nuances of these unique ways of bridging worlds.

Mediumship: Whispers from the Other Side

At its heart, mediumship is primarily focused on establishing communication with the spirits of deceased individuals – our loved ones who have crossed over, ancestors, or other departed souls. The core purpose of a medium is to provide evidence of life after death, offering solace, comfort, and sometimes guidance to the bereaved.

A skilled medium acts as an intermediary, a bridge connecting the living with the spirit world. They tune into the unique energetic frequencies of the departed, interpreting the messages, emotions, and sometimes even visual or auditory impressions they receive. These messages often contain specific details, memories, and personality traits that serve to validate the identity of the spirit communicator, bringing a sense of peace and closure to those left behind. The medium typically remains conscious or enters a light trance state, allowing them to consciously process and articulate the information received. Think of a medium as a skilled translator, carefully conveying the whispers from the other side.

Channeling: Opening a Portal to Higher Wisdom

Channeling, on the other hand, opens a broader portal to a wider spectrum of non-physical entities. While communication with deceased individuals can occur in channeling, it’s not the central focus. Instead, channels often connect with spirit guides, angelic beings, ascended master collectives like “The Christ Consciousness,” or even extraterrestrial collectives like “The One.”

The primary goal of channeling is often to receive wisdom, teachings, guidance, and broader perspectives on various aspects of life, spirituality, and the universe. The information shared tends to be more philosophical, offering insights for personal and collective growth, spiritual evolution, and understanding the nature of reality.

The role of a channel can vary. In some instances, the channel may enter a deeper trance state, allowing the entity to temporarily use their vocal cords and even body to communicate directly. In other forms, the channel remains conscious but allows the entity’s thoughts, energy, and insights to flow through them, which they then articulate in their own way. Imagine a channel as an open conduit, allowing a diverse range of teachers and guides to share their knowledge and perspectives.

In the case of both Lauren and Jackie, their voice tone or modulation will change during a channeling session, but it’s never obvious that another voice is coming through them. Both enter a trance state. Jackie has her eyes closed while in trance; Lauren has her eyes open like she’s reading from a ticker tape news feed. Both are receiving additional information in the form of images, sensations, or insights while channeling for their respective sources, but are often not fully aware of the interaction while they are actively channeling. They often “return” from a channeling session feeling highly activated with side notes from the collective energy, but do not remember the full conversation.

“In my experience, I have acted as a translator to take the signs, symbols, words, phrases, feelings or knowings and turn all of this into a spoken language to provide messages from passed on loved ones, guides, ascended masters, and angels to the intended recipient.

For me, the difference is instead of doing all the above (psychic charades, basically) channeling is stepping aside by matching vibration to a larger and higher consciousness. This allows the higher consciousness access to my voice, my life experience library, and my culture to provide messages for individuals and humanity in general at this time of Great Awakening (their term for this time).”

Key Differences Summarized:

To solidify the distinction, consider these key differences:

  • Focus of Communication: Mediumship centers on the deceased; channeling encompasses a wider range of entities.
  • Primary Purpose: Mediumship aims to provide evidence of the afterlife and comfort; channeling often seeks to impart wisdom and guidance.
  • Role of the Conduit: A medium acts as an interpreter; a channel can be a more direct vessel.
  • State of Consciousness: Mediums typically remain conscious or lightly entranced; channels can range from light to deep trance.

Overlapping Yet Distinct:

While the distinctions are important, it’s also worth noting that there can be some overlap. Both Jackie and Lauren possess abilities that blur the lines, occasionally getting impressions from the dead or spirit guides, or receiving personal messages within a broader channeled session. However, the primary intention and the nature of the communication usually leans more heavily towards channeled the messages from ascended masters that have specifically chosen them for this role.

Understanding the difference between mediumship and channeling allows for a more informed appreciation of these unique spiritual practices. Whether seeking connection with departed loved ones or guidance from higher realms, both offer profound avenues for exploring the unseen and expanding our understanding of the interconnectedness of all things.
